Cumbria ( KUM-bree-ə) is a ceremonial county in North West England, bordering Scotland. Its largest settlement is Carlisle.
Cumbria was created as a non-metropolitan county in 1974 from Westmorland, Cumberland, the Furness area of Lancashire, and a small part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The county was two-tier and contained six districts: Allerdale, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden, and South Lakeland. In April 2023 the county and district councils were abolished and replaced by two new districts, Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland, which are unitary authorities.Cumbria is the third largest ceremonial county in England by area but the eighth-smallest by population, with 500,012 residents in 2019. The county is predominantly rural, with much of its economy based on agriculture and tourism. It is bordered to the north by the Scottish lieutenancy areas of Dumfries and Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale; to the east by Northumberland and County Durham; to the south-east by North Yorkshire; the south by Lancashire; and to the west by the Irish Sea. After Carlisle (74,281), Cumbria's largest settlements are Barrow-in-Furness (56,745), Kendal (29,593), and Whitehaven (23,986).
