Doncaster (, ) is a minster town in South Yorkshire, England. Named after the River Don on which it is situated, it is the administrative centre of the larger Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. It is the second largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield, with which the town shares the international Doncaster Sheffield Airport, some 6 miles (10 km) to the south-east. Founded by the Romans, Doncaster is today a major regional town with important transport links and recreational sites. It is also considered a market town due to its large market centre and market charter status from medieval times. At the 2021 census, the borough had a population of 308,100, while its built-up area had a population of 158,141 at the 2011 census.Sheffield lies 17 miles (27 km) south-west, Leeds 25 miles (40 km) north-west, York 30 miles (48 km) to the north, Hull 36 miles (58 km) north-east, and Lincoln 32 miles (51 km) south-east. Doncaster's suburbs include Armthorpe, Bessacarr and Sprotbrough. The towns of Bawtry, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Hatfield and Stainforth, among others, are only a short distance away within the metropolitan borough. The towns of Epworth and Haxey are a short distance to the east in Lincolnshire, and directly south is the town of Harworth Bircotes in Nottinghamshire. Also within the town's vicinity are Barnsley, Wakefield, Pontefract, Selby, Goole, Scunthorpe, Gainsborough, Retford, Worksop and Rotherham, to which Doncaster is linked by road and rail.
On 20 May 2022 it was announced that, as part of the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours, Doncaster would receive city status by Letters Patent in November 2022.
